WABASSO — The month of June has been the month of the Milroy Irish.

After falling to Raymond on May 27, Milroy has been red-hot, winning eight straight games in June. On Wednesday, the Irish looked to continue that streak against Wabasso. Wabasso would battle, with the score being tied after four innings, but a late offensive push carried the Irish to a 9-2 victory.

The Irish jumped out to an early lead behind a fielder’s choice RBI groundout by catcher Derek Smith. Wabasso responded in the bottom of the third inning by scoring two runs in that inning and took the lead from the Irish, 2-1.

However, that would be the last run Wabasso would score as it was all Irish moving forward. The Irish in the very next inning tied up the game before scoring in three straight innings, including a solo home run by outfielder Tyler Patterson, who would also have multiple hits in the ballgame with two RBIs. Then to add insurance, Smith would hit a two-run home run over the left field wall to make it 6-2 and give him three RBIs on the night. The Irish would score two more in that same inning and break open a close game into a decisive 9-2 victory over Wabasso. Starting pitcher for the Irish Jake Plaetz earned the win, throwing a strong six innings and allowing just two runs.

No final stats were available at press time.

Wabasso (5-8) has lost their last four out of five games and will face Bird Island at home on Friday at 7:30 p.m. For the Irish, they have won nine straight games and also hold an undefeated record in conference play at 9-0 and a 15-2 overall record and will face Ruthton and Hadley at home on Sunday at 2 and 5 p.m, respectively.
