MARSHALL — After earning a hard-fought second-place finish in its home tournament last weekend, the Marshall Black 17U baseball team looked to continue the momentum against Worthington on Thursday. But Worthington had other ideas, and gained an early lead at 4-3 after four innings when this edition went to press.
Worthington grabbed an early lead after a solo home run, but Marshall was able to answer back in the bottom of the third. After allowing an infield single by Carter Kepler, Worthington threw three wild pitches, each resulting in Kepler to take a base and score the first run of the game for Marshall. After a couple of more walks and a base hit, one more wild pitch was thrown where it hit the fence and allowed another runner to score, tying up the game at 2-2 after three innings.
The ensuing inning, Worthington would retake the lead with clutch hits and aggressive baserunning scoring two runs in the inning to lead 4-2 heading into the bottom of the fourth. Marshall was able to score another run in the fourth but couldn’t tie or take the lead in the ballgame, trailing by one at press time.
No final stats were available at press time.
