LEGION BASEBALL: Jacobson two-run triple gives Marshall edge over Worthington 3-2

Chris Drummond

MARSHALL — After not playing since July 2, the Marshall Legion baseball team didn’t know what to expect when it took the field against Worthington on Tuesday. Worthington was able to build an early lead, but Marshall changed the momentum in one frame to earn a 3-2 victory in its home finale of the regular season.

The Mudcats started out slow and trailed most of the game by surrendering runs in the top of the second and the third being down 2-0 heading into the fifth inning. The Mudcats’ bats came alive that inning, though, and some costly errors by Worthington set up a huge triple hit by starting pitcher/first baseman Charlie Jacobson. Jacobson’s triple scored two runs and pushed Marshall into the lead for good at 3-2, which was the final score.

Seven different batters for the Mudcats (Tyler Maeyaert, Jacobson, Talan Plante, Andrew Wallen, Jon Gruhot, Lincoln Graven and Zach Leibfried) registered hits in the game and head coach of the Mudcats Mitchell Maxwell spoke on the team’s performance in the game.

“We showed some rust early in the game because we haven’t played in a while,” Maxwell said. “We came out kind of flat to start the game but we were able to pull ourselves together and get the job done.”

Maxwell also talked about the importance of Jacobson’s hit in the ballgame.

Well we call him Big Diesel the way he was running on the basepaths,” Maxwell said. “He is a guy who steps up on big moments and comes through. We have come to expect that out of him in those moments.”

The Marshall Mudcats will travel to Princeton and play in the Princeton tournament this weekend from July 15-17.

Hitting: Marshall (Maeyaert 1-3; Jacobson 1-3, 2 RBI; Plante 1-3; Wallen 1-3; Gruhot 1-3; Graven 1-1; Leibfried 1-2, RBI).

Pitching (IP-R-ER-H-BB-SO): Marshall (Jacobson 1-0-0-1-0-2; Schmitt 3-2-2-1-2-6; Maeyaert 2.2-0-0-0-3-4; Wallen 0.1-0-0-0-0-0).
