Milroy Irish advance in Region 13C with win over Ruthton Royals

RUTHTON — The Milroy Irish were looking to close out the Ruthton Royals on Friday night and did so in dominant fashion, winning 13-1 in seven innings.

Milroy erupted in the fourth inning. It started off with back to back Dolan RBI single by designated hitter Issac Dolan and outfielder Dominick Dolan. The Irish then had back to back two RBI singles by Ben Heichel and Brady Lanour, extending their lead to 8-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth

Starting pitcher for the Royals Cody Wichmann laced a ball deep into the outfield which resulted in a triple, but was stranded on third base as the Irish would get the next three outs to end the inning and keep the score at 8-0.

In the ensuing inning for the Irish, Lanoue would get his third and fourth RBI of the game by ripping a shot to right field, making it 10-0 at the end of the fifth.

The highlight of the night for the Royals was Shay Wabeke getting a RBI single to avoid a second straight shutout. However, the Irish would add three more runs in the following inning with RBI singles by catcher Derek Smith and Heichel getting his third RBI.

Irish manager Anthony Dolan spoke about the series win and what’s next for his team.

“We put good bats up tonight scoring 13 runs and got 13 hits as well,” Dolan said. “Our six-run inning in the fourth busted the game wide open and took the wind out of their sails. We’re happy to win this series so we will rest up and get ready for whoever we play next.”

Royals manager Eric Wiering reflected on the game and the season as it came to an end tonight.

“Pitching wise was okay, but we knew it was going to be tough against the Irish,” Wiering said. “They’re the No. 1 seed for a reason and Kenny Morris threw a heck of a game tonight. We started the season slow, not having everybody on the team, but as of late we had a lot of guys around and we were able to get our first playoff series win in our team history, which is a step in the right direction.”

The Milroy Irish will open play at home in the next round versus the winner of the Hadley/Jackson series on Wednesday.
