MARSHALL — The Southwest Minnesota State University women’s soccer team has been going through a rough patch. However, in Friday’s tilt against the St. Cloud State Huskies, the Mustangs came out with a 2-2 tie.
The Mustangs struck first with a goal from forward Alex Lotts, giving SMSU the early lead.
The Huskies would respond late in the first half tying up the game at one all and the score would remain that way as the first half ended.
In the second half, the Mustangs possessed the ball more than the Huskies and would eventually strike with 13:38 left in the game. Defender for the Mustangs Madi Foutz, would give SMSU the lead again, 2-1.
All the Mustangs would need to do is keep the Huskies from scoring to secure their first victory of the season.
The Huskies would not obliged.
They tied up the game again in the second half with just 6:38 remaining in the half.
Both teams would have shots on goal to break the tie but ultimately couldn’t find the net.
The Mustangs recorded their fifth tie in eight games played and head coach Clayton Glasgow spoke about the grind and process of this season.
“You know it is always a challenge especially when you score first,” Glasgow said. “It requires a lot of concentration to not let a team come back and score. We scored two goals today and that was a positive but we allowed them to come back and tie the game. For us, it was a much better second half and overall it was a very competitive game played.”
The SMSU Mustangs (0-3-5) will host Minnesota Duluth at 1 p.m on Sunday.
