MARSHALL — The Marshall boys hockey team looked to close the regular season in style on Friday against Waseca. Thanks to a strong offensive outburst, Marshall did just that, earning an 8-1 victory over the Bluejays on Senior Night at the Red Baron Arena and Expo.
he Tigers came out on fire, scoring four goals in the first period and took a 4-0 lead into the intermission. Tigers forward Talan Plante started the scoring with an unassisted goal just 37 seconds into the game. Tigers defenseman Parker Schmitt then scored on a nifty pass from Sean Nwaiga giving them a two-goal lead. Goals were followed by Tigers forwards Andrew Seanor and Wyatt Boerboom as the Tigers scored four goals on just 12 shots in the opening frame. In the second period at around the 13:20 mark, a brief skirmish happened between both teams where pushing and shoving was involved. The referees took a five-minute stoppage to sort out all of the penalties between the two teams. After that, play resumed and the Tigers scored three more goals in the period, with both Boerboom and Schmitt each netting their second goal of the game, taking a 7-1 lead into the intermission. Tigers forward Braxton Meyer would score the lone goal of the third period giving him his 24th goal of the season. Marshall head coach Michael Weiss spoke about his team’s performance in the game. “I thought we played well, one of our goals of the night was to get pucks to the net,” Weiss said. “We were able to get the four goal lead early and get some confidence going, which was huge for us.” After Friday’s contest, there were eight seniors (Jared Reinsma, Meyer, Robbie Seanor, Boerboom, Tucker Mauch, Gabe Sherman, Logan Deutz and Carter Versaevel) from the Tigers boys hockey team that were recognized. Coach Weiss advocated about the impact of his senior class on the program.
They mean a lot, they have put in a lot of hard work these past couple of years,” Weiss said. “They brought the team together this year and have had a pretty good season so far.”
Kyle Ahlschlager scored the only goal for the Bluejays in the game.
Ezra Maurice earned the victory in net for Marshall, recording 18 saves.
Marshall (14-11) will await to find out their sectional opponent next week with time and day to be determined.
