CHRIS DRUMMOND cdrummond@marshallindependent.com

TYLER — After winning just six games in 2019, the Russell-Tyler-Ruthton softball team more than doubled that total in 2021, winning 15 games en route to an overall record of 15-8. This year the Knights will look to maintain that momentum under coach Darren Baartman, who is entering his second season at the helm.

RTR brings back six returning players led by Kya Alderson, Ragan Mitchell, Lily Klumper, Madi Burns, Whitney Bruns and Sara Hartson. Coach Baartman spoke on his team’s strengths and areas of improvement for this upcoming season.

“Pitching and defense will be areas we concentrate on this season,” Baartman said. “We want to be able to put the ball in play on a consistent basis.”

With one senior on the team (Mitchell), the Knights have a young team that is looking forward to having another successful season. Coach Baartman talked about expectations for this team in the upcoming season.

“We want to be able to get better in practice every day,” Baartman said. “I am looking forward to seeing the girls improve every day on the field.”
