MARSHALL –After an impressive 10-0 victory against Worthington on Tuesday, the Marshall baseball team looked to keep the momentum going in a doubleheader matchup against Waseca. Marshall did just that, taking out the Bluejays 4-0 in Game 1 and 15-3 in five innings in Game 2 to earn the sweep on Saturday at Legion Field.
The Tigers manufactured runs in Game 1 by taking advantage of the Bluejays’ miscues in the field. Outfielder Connor Neubeck led the way for the Tigers with three hits and two RBIs, getting on base in every at-bat. Tyler Maeyaert started the game and would go five innings allowing three hits and striking out six. The Bluejays had multiple chances to score but left runners on base each time as the Tigers defense held up.
In Game 2, the Tigers jumped out to an early five-run lead in the first, scoring more runs in that inning than the entire previous game of the series. It would be a dominant performance by the Tigers as they led 15-0 after four and a half innings. The Bluejays mustered three runs to not be completely shut out for both games. Maeyaert had four hits and drove in three RBIs, while outfielder/pitcher/catcher Jon Gruhot had three hits and drove in four RBIs. Pitcher Parker Schmitt started the game and went four innings allowing just three hits and struck out four. Marshall head coach Chace Pollock assessed his team’s performance and talked about how the difficulties of the season so far playing outside.
“I thought we played really well defensively and we pitched well,” Pollock said. “It’s a challenge no doubt, because we haven’t been able to practice on the field. We’ve had 25 practices in a gym and one on a field. We’ll keep working with what we got and get better.”
Marshall (3-1) will travel to face Mankato West High School today at 7:15 p.m.
