SPRING SPORTS PREVIEW: Lakeview baseball

CHRIS DRUMMOND cdrummond@marshallindependent.com

COTTONWOOD — The Lakeview Lakers baseball team were a young team last year, with seven sophomores starters on the roster. With not much experience, the Lakers had a rough season, winning just three games. Now with another year under its belt, Lakeview will look to take a step forward under second-year head coach Logan Funk.

“I’m expecting great things from this team,” Funk said. “Last year we were super young with seven of our starters as sophomores and now they know what it takes to be at the varsity level. I’m expecting great things from our hitters and know how to work the count better “

Seniors Cayden Caron, Luke Sander and Kiegan Marczak along with juniors Jordan Fischer and Hunter Magnuson will look to lead the way but Lakeview will have the challenging task of replacing its top two pitchers, an area Funk said they need to improve.

“We hope to improve on our pitching,” Funk said. “We lost our number one pitcher in Caine Herigon due to shoulder surgery and lost our number two pitcher as he graduated. We need guys to step in starting and reliever roles.”

With the inclement weather, Funk said so far they’ve been working on learning their defensive plays as well as focusing on their hitting and pitching mechanics. Funk also talked about what he is most looking forward to with the season approaching.

” I’m looking forward to just working these group of guys again this year,” Funk said. “They know in order to win, they need to put in the effort and you can’t ask anything better in a team that wants to win so bad.”
