PREP SOFTBALL: MCC falls to RRC/WWG, 9-3

SLAYTON — The Murray County Central softball team looked to maintain its recent strong play after winning five of its past six games. But their opponent Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove had other ideas, and capitalized on several MCC errors to earn a 9-3 victory on Tuesday.

MCC’s miscues led to the Falcons scoring first and having a two-run lead after the first inning. Both defenses then settled in and played well, with no change to the score until the fifth inning. The Rebels would have seven passed balls and multiple errors in the field, which the Falcons took advantage of and scored six runs in the top of the fifth inning to give themselves an 8-0 lead after five and not look back en route to the 9-3 final.

RRC/WWG head coach Derek Stevenson assessed his team’s performance in the game.

“We played another solid defensive game and Addeson Jenniges pitched well,” Stevenson said. “We hit the ball and used our speed when we needed to. We took advantage of their errors, their passed balls, and we needed to. I was very happy with our performance.”

MCC head coach Elissa Wieneke also spoke on her team’s performance in the loss.

“Thought it was a beautiful day to come out and play but we were not ready and didn’t adjust well,” Wieneke said. “We had some mental errors, we need to communicate better, that’s one of our weaknesses and Red Rock exposed that.”

Wieneke added that they can beat any team on any given day but they have to show up and have the right attitude.

No final stats were available at press time.

MCC will travel next to Mountain Lake to face off against MLA/Comfrey on Thursday at 4:30 p.m., while Red Rock Central will host Adrian/Ellsworth on Thursday as well at 4:30 p.m.
