MARSHALL — After winning its last four games, the Marshall Tigers boys hockey team looked to keep things going against Luverne on Thursday. But the Cardinals had other ideas, breaking a 2-2 tie with a pair of third-period goals to earn a 4-2 victory at the Red Baron Arena and Expo.
After a slow start for both teams in the first period, the Cardinals opened the scoring and put the Tigers in a 1-0 deficit at the end of the first period. Marshall would respond, however. Forward Jared Reinsma would tie up the game netting his 17th goal of the season before adding his 20th assist of the season on a goal by forward Zach Kramer that gave Marshall a 2-1 lead, but Luverne scored right before the end of the second period to tie it up at two all. Both teams battled hard throughout the entire game but ultimately two more late goals in the third period by the Cardinals gave the Tigers a 4-2 loss on home ice. Marshall Tigers head coach Michael Weiss said they just had too many little mistakes that hurt them. “We just didn’t take care of the details,” Weiss said. “The little plays from puck bouncing off our stick, missing the net, and not being in the right position adds up to a loss.” Marshall outshot Luverne 30-29 on the game. Ezra Maurice recorded 25 saves in net for Marshall. The Tigers will be on the road for the next two contests, starting with a rematch from last Saturday’s game against the Minnesota River Bulldogs this Saturday at 4 p.m. Luverne 4, Marshall 2 Luverne 1 1 2 – 4 Marshall 0 2 0 – 2 SCORING SUMMARY First Period Luverne: Domagala, 3:03 (Kroski).
