PREP BOYS HOCKEY: Marshall gets past Minnesota River 6-5

CHRIS DRUMMOND cdrummond@marshallindependen

MARSHALL — The Marshall Tigers boys hockey team has had to rely on its resiliency during its three-game win streak, with its past two games being decided in overtime. On Saturday, Marshall was put to the test again, but once more found a way to win in a 6-5 victory over Minnesota River at the Red Baron Arena and Expo.

Braxton Meyer opened the scoring for the game for the Tigers before they followed up with another goal by teammate Talan Plante to give Marshall an early 2-0 lead and later a 2-1 advantage after the first period.

The Bulldogs would respond, though. After allocating a third Marshall goal early in the second scored by Jared Reinsma, Minnesota River would rally to take the lead but the period ended tied up at five all, with Reinsma and Zach Kramer scoring for Marshall.

In the third, Meyer would net another goal, his second of the game, and the goal ultimately served as the game-winner to give Marshall the 6-5 win. It would be Meyer’s 20th goal of the season.

Marshall head coach Michael Weiss spoke about his team’s resiliency exhibited throughout that final period.

“We took a timeout and just kinda said we have to reset, start over,” Weiss said. “We got the goal to go ahead and to close it out with a 6-on-4 disadvantage was really big.”

Despite the win, the Tigers were penalized seven times equaling 14 minutes. Coach Weiss advocated about how his team would need to be better in that area.

“We need to limit our penalties, that would eliminate a lot of opportunities for the other team,” Weiss said. “Also just making sure we’re staying on the defensive side of the puck and not being too offensive by overskating.”

Reinsma would also score two goals and added an assist for the Tigers in the win. Ezra Maurice earned the victory in net for Marshall, recording 24 saves.

Diego Gettig for the Bulldogs netted two goals in the loss.

Marshall (11-9) will play host next to the Luverne Cardinals on Thursday evening at 7 p.m.
